The 1986 Tour de France remains one of the most talked-about chapters in professional cycling. La Vie Claire placed two riders on the top two steps of the podium: Greg LeMond, the first American ever to win the Tour, and Bernard Hinault, a five-time champion who had pledged to guide his teammate to victory. The alliance-rivalry between the two men — at turns fierce competitors and mountain collaborators — kept cycling fans gripped all the way to the Champs-Élysées. A landmark moment in the sport, carried by one of the most dominant squads of the era.
